Joe’s been racing since 1988. Like many other local racers, he got started by participating in the Wednesday night races at Cal Yacht Club’s Sunset Series. In ’91, he met a local legend by the name of Mike Guccionne  and started racing aboard PROPHET, Mike’s Laser 28. Over the next four years on PROPHET, Joe focused primarily on mainsail trimming while doing his best to keep the excitable owner/skipper focused on driving. The crowning point of that period was PROPHET’S win in the ’94 Trimble-North Race Week, which included first in class and winning the overall regatta trophy.

When PROPHET was sold, Joe moved up to a Farr 40 (IOR) on which he did a little bit of everything (except bow and helm) and became a specialist in running the pit. Successes on that boat include firsts in class in the PHRF & ASMBYC Championships, the Santa Barbara–King Harbor Race, the CYC Sunset Series and first PHRF overall in the Newport–Ensenada Race.

More recently, Joe has discovered that in addition to short course buoy racing, he has a real appetite for longer offshore races. He has done the San Diego–Puerto Vallarta Race and, last summer, he was one of seven local racers aboard BULL, a brand new Sydney 40 which finished First in Division 4 and First Overall in the 2001 Transpacific Yacht Race.

When not on a raceboat, Joe and his wife Donna and Tiller, their border collie enjoy daysailing on Santa Monica Bay and long weekends at the Catalina Isthmus aboard their Newport 30, BARRAMUNDI.
